With my home renovation project in full swing, the idea of transformation has been on my mind a lot lately. I recently attended one of interior designer Marc Peridis’s design talks at 19 Greek Street. He spoke about how a physical space can transform a person’s wellbeing.
I know this to be true, as I’ve seen this first hand through my interior design projects. However, it’s through my organisation business Sorted London where I’ve seen the biggest transformation between a user and their physical environment.
People often say the physical manifests into the mental – or visa versa – and this is most true with clutter and disorganisation. It’s why books such as Marie Kondo’s The Life Changing Magic of Tidying have become so popular. Our complicated relationship with our belongings means we are both profoundly attached to our stuff and, ironically, overburdened by it. We want more, but less of it.
In summary, by clearing and organising your space, you end up clearing and organising your mind – and the power of that is transformational.

3 Tips to Assess Your Stuff (And Transform Your Space)
1. Take stock of what you have.
Awareness is always the first step before beginning any project. By understanding what you already own, you can determine what you’re missing – and, conversely, what you have too much of in the first place. Facing all of your belongings head-on can be daunting, but it’s a very important first step in transforming your space (and your life).
2. Think about your (real) lifestyle.
Holding on to that beach bag you’ve had for 10 years, just in case you decide to move to Spain? Where our first tip was about understanding your stuff, this process is all about understanding you. What does your lifestyle (or work style) look like in an average week? Be honest with yourself: chances are, you’ll quickly realise you don’t need that beach bag after all.
3. Determine what your ‘kit’ is.
Now that you know your stuff and know yourself, it’s important to determine what you need, be that at work or at home. What ‘kit’ will help you best do your job or live your life? I’ve spoken about having the right kit at your disposal before, and it stands true here. Further to this, have a think about what items you take pleasure in using or just really like. As Marie Kondo says – what brings you joy?
