A Sustainable Retail and Workshop Space for Yodomo

Project Kallax is an interior design project recently completed for Yodomo, a Hackney Wick-based company dedicated to textile reuse. The brief was to transform an office and storage space into a flexible retail area that could also serve as a venue for workshops. The space needed to showcase textile remnants, yarns, offcuts, and samples, while allowing for quick conversion into a creative workshop environment.

At the core of the design was Yodomo’s commitment to sustainability. To honour this, we focused on sourcing second-hand storage units and repurposed furniture, giving pre-loved pieces a new lease of life. The Ikea Kallax system was chosen as the primary storage solution for its modularity and practicality, making it easy to display the wide range of materials in an organised, accessible manner. The Kallax units were placed throughout the space, with careful consideration for flow and flexibility. Their clean lines kept the focus on the textiles themselves, allowing them to stand out as the true centerpiece of the space.

In addition to the Kallax system, we introduced a cutting table on wheels that could easily be moved to open up space for workshops. This added a dynamic element to the layout, making the transition from retail to workshop seamless. We also incorporated island displays that could be shifted as needed to adapt the space for different events, further emphasising the flexibility required for Yodomo’s business model.

The combination of second-hand furniture, neutral tones, and natural textures created a welcoming atmosphere. We paid special attention to lighting, opting for soft, warm tones to enhance the inviting feel. The design ensured that the space was both functional and comfortable for customers browsing textile materials or attending workshops.

The outcome was a highly adaptable and sustainable space that perfectly suited Yodomo’s needs. The client was delighted with the final result, which not only aligned with their sustainability goals but also provided an engaging, creative environment for their retail and workshop activities.

Project Kallax stands as a testament to how thoughtful design can marry functionality with sustainability. It highlights the value of upcycling and reusing materials to create a unique, inspiring space that serves both retail and educational purposes.
